Birthwort, Indian

Sathsada (Sinhalese), Ishwari (Sanskrit)
Aristolochia indica

Family:  Aristolochiaceae        TOXIC
Herbaceous twining tropical perennial.  Native to tropical India and Sri Lanka.  The root, rhizome and leaves of this striking plant are exotically aromatic.  All members of the Aristolociaceae bear flowers of unusual hues and curious shapes, and this rare find from tropical Sri Lanka is no exception.  The root is used as an antidote for snakebite and the stings of scorpions.  In india, the juice of the leaves is taken internally for treating malaria, stomach problems, cholera and diarrhea.  However, recent studies have shown potential carcinogenic effects from internal use of plants belonging to the Aristolochiacea family.  Cultivation: Easy.  Sow seed in a warm greenhouse and keep moist.  This plant is suitable for cultivation in frost free areas, greenhouse or indoors only.  Full sun.  Deeply drained, sandy soil.  Space plants 1 foot apart.
