This section is devoted to all the head instructors and their assistants who have given unselfishly their time and efforts to promote the martial arts and sports.

Young Koo Lee, 26, is the head instructor of the Chung Do Kwan Karate Club in New York City. He was born in Seoul, Korea, and graduated from high school there. He entered the United States in 1959 and since then has received a B.A. degree in economics from Long Island University. At present he is a special investigator for the New York City Department. of Welfare. Young Koo Lee is a 4th-Dan Black Belt in karate and is affiliated with the Korean Karate Association. Wally Jay, 47, is head instructor of the Island Judo-Jujitsu Club and of Jay's Judo-Jujitsu Club, both in Alameda, Calif. He studied jujitsu in Hawaii under the late Henry Okazaki and holds a 6th-Dan ju-jitsu Black Belt as well as a 3rd-Dan Black Belt in judo. He is 2nd Vice-President of both the Central Coast Judo Yudanshakai and the American Jujitsu Institute. He majored in science at Oregon State University and works as a postal employee. He's married and has four children.
Peter A. Ventresca, 34, was born in -Italy. He came to the United States at the age of five. He was awarded the rank of 1st-Dan Black Belt in karate in 1964 and is the head instructor of the Ventresca Studio of Japanese Karate in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Ventresca is a former Boston University student. He is married and makes his living as an engineer in the building trade. Bill Helms is the assistant instructor of the Charlotte, North Carolina, Aikido Club. He has been an instructor there since 1962. Bill was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and attended Harding High School there. He also attended Lees McRae College. He received his rank of 1st-Dan Black Belt in aikido from master Kenji Tomiki of Waseda University in Tokyo Japan.
Stanley Israel, 23, is the chief instructor of the Midwood Judo Center, inc., in Brooklyn, New York. He was born in Brooklyn and went to Bushwick High School there. He graduated from the City College of New York as a business administration major. He is presently employed as a salesman. Mr. Israel is affiliated with the Judo Black Belt Federation, the AAU and the New York Judo Yudanshakai. He received his 1st-Dan Black Belt in 1962. Yukiso Yamamoto, 61, came to Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1923 from Hiroshima, Japan, and was one of the earliest judo instructors in the Islands. He was promoted to 6th-Dan Black Belt in judo in 1960 and is still active as a judo official. His main interest, however, is aikido. In 1953 he was one of master Tohei's first students in Hawaii and in 1961 was made a 5th Dan. He heads the Hawaii Aiki Kwai and is chief instructor at the Honolulu Aiki Dojo.
Takayuki Mikami, 30, was born in Niigata, Japan. He attended Yoshikawa High School in Japan and graduated from Hosei University where he majored in Japanese literature. He is the karate instructor of the Athletic Club of Shreveport in Shreveport, Louisiana. He holds a 5th-Dan Black Belt in karate and is affiliated with the Japan Karate Association. His wife also has a Black: Belt in karate. Tran Quan Ba, 23, came to Canada from Saigon, Vietnam. He is the head karate instructor of the LaLonde Karate Academy in Montreal. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Paris, France, where he studied mathematics; he is presently studying political science at the University of Montreal. Tran Quang Ba holds 1st-Dan Black Belts in karate, ju-jitsu and judo, and 1st-Kyu Brown Belts in aikido and kendo. He is affiliated with the Canadian Kodokan Judo Black Belt Association.
Larry Cole, 28, is a graduate of Reed College and the University of Oregon and is studying for a Ph.D. in psychology at Columbia University in New York. While at Reed he paid a weekend visit to a Buddhist monastery and stayed for 8 months, studying Zen and judo. He was promoted to 1st-Dan Black Belt in 1956. At his New York City social-work center, the Lower Eastside Action Project, he teaches judo to boys as an antidote to dope and gangs. Richard Hirao, 43, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and attended Wallace Rider Farrington High School there. He is the head aikido instructor at the Koboji Mission in Honolulu. Mr. Hirao was promoted to 2nd-Dan Black Belt in aikido in 1964. He is affiliated with the Honolulu Aiki Dojo Yudanshakai and is chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee. He works as a confectioner and is married and has four children.
Leonard Simms, 28, is the assistant instructor at the Cleveland School of Self-Defense and Judo in Ohio. He was born in Cleveland and attended John Adams High School there. He is a member of the Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Federation of the U.S.A. and wears a 1st-Degree Black Belt in the French foot fighting art of savate. He also holds a 1st-Dan Black Belt in ju-jitsu which he received in 1963. He is married and makes his living as a grinder. Ben Otake, 26, was born in Pasadena, California. He holds a 2nd-Dan Black Beit in karate and a 1st Dan in judo. He is presently working his way through Pasadena City College by teaching karate at the Karate Self-Defense School, 382 North Lake Avenue, Pasadena. After graduating from Pasadena City College he plans to go on to medical school and study to become a doctor.
John Keehan, 25, is presently head instructor at the Imperial Academy of Fighting Arts in Chicago, Illinois. He was head instructor of the nationwide U. S. Karate Association but recently parted with that organization and formed his own World Karate Association. He is chairman and founder of the Chicago Karate Yudanshakai and the Midwest Karate Yudanshakai, and he was a principal organizer of the World Karate Championships. He is a 5th-Dan Black Belt in karate. John Johanessen, 35, was born in Brooklyn, New York, and attended the State University of New York at Oswego. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in science. He is a school teacher at Fitch Senior High School in Groton, Connecticut, where he's head instructor of the Sae Ki Kwan Judo Club. He studied judo in Korea and was awarded a 1st-Dan Black Belt by the Korean Judo Association. He is a member of the JBBF, and is chairman of the Connecticut AAU Judo Committee.
Peter Dzingwa, 26, is the head instructor o the Matsushita Judo-Karate Club in his home town of Benoni, Wattville Township, in the South African Transvaal. He holds a 1st-Kyu Brown Belt in judo and is a student of karate He has a Junior Certificate (Standard Nine) in Scripture from the Benoni Secondary School He is married and has one child and makes his living as an assistant commercial photographer. Robert Popilock, 27, is the head instructor of the Somers Point Karate Club in Somers Point, New Jersey. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Southeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia. He attended Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania, as a pre-med student and is presently employed as an X-ray technician. He has a 1st Dan Black Belt in karate, and is married and has two children.
Quai Wong, 25, was born in Canton, China. After graduating from the H. J. MacDonald High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, he attended the New York Institute of Photography in New York City. He presently works as a commercial photographer in Toronto, Canada, where he is the head instructor of Wong's Karate Kung-fu Society. In 1963 he was promoted to 1st Dan Black Belt by Masa mi Tsuruoka of the Chito ryu style of karate. Raoul Sudre, 26, is the head judo and fencing coach at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. A native of Casablanca, Morocco, he graduated from the French Lycee there and holds a B.S. degree in hotel administration from Cornell. He holds a 2nd Dan Black Belt (1960) from the French Judo Fed., and a Brown Belt from the French Karate Ass'n. He has also studied aikido and ju-jitsu. His Cornell team placed 3rd in the 1963 National College Judo Tourney and 1st in the Eastern College Judo Tournament of 1962.
David Chow, 31, came to UCLA from Shanghai, China, at the age of 17 and won the California State Judo Championship that same year. He holds a Master's degree in international economics from UCLA and a 2nd-Dan Black Belt from the Nanka Judo Yudanshakai. He is the head instructor of three Tai Wai Dojos in Southern California. Besides being a successful photographer and movie and television actor this former weightlifter heads his own Asian import consulting firm. Ronald Hildebrand, 31, is the head instructor o f the Anchorage School of Judo in Anchorage, Alaska. He was born in Vermillion, Alberta, Canada, and moved to Escondido, California, where he attended Escondido Union High School. He attained the rank of 1st-Dan Black Belt in 1962. He is presently affiliated with the Judo Black Belt Federation and is a member of the Northwest Yudanshakai. He is married and has four children.
Bernard Moore, 22 years old, a graduate of Kaimuki High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, is the head karate instructor at a Young Men's Christian Association in San Francisco, California. He studied the Chito-ryu style of Japanese karate under Tommy T. Morita in Hawaii and holds a 2nd-Dan Black Belt from the Hawaii Karate-Doh Renmei. He is married and makes his living as a stock clerk in the San Francisco area. Timothy Tackett, 23, of Redlands, Calif., just returned from 2 1/2 years of duty on Taiwan with the U.S. Air Force. While there he studied under several Chinese martial arts masters. He studied northern kuoshu (similar to karate) which does not give rank, and he holds a 2nd-Degree Black Belt in southern kuoshu. He recently opened the School of Chinese Karate in Redlands. A drama and education student at San Bernardino College in California, he is married and has two children.
