BUILDING TERMS & GLOSSARY

Typically when performing plate layout for walls, floor joists or rafters we are required to measure down the plate 16 inches on center (or 24 inches) do a mental 3/4” subtraction then put a mark at 15 and 1/4 inches. We work our way down the plates performing this task for every on-center measurement. When we are finished we come back with a square and mark a line for each mark that we previously made. If this is not enough now we have to remeasure for our windows, doors and intersecting walls. This also requires computing stud thickness’ to place studs for windows and doors, and 2x widths for intersecting wall channels. Now lets hope our framer places the studs on the proper side of our lines.

With the Ultra Square all of these tasks may be performed in one pass down the plates and provide us the capability of centering and marking both sides of each stud, mark up to three studs at once for windows, and mark channel. All of this may be done on two plates by simply measuring and marking all wall components as we work our way from one end to the other. There is no doubt where our framer is going to place the studs.

PLATE LAYOUT: Partially extend the tape and slip its belt clip over the ULTRA SQUARE's Guide. Extend the tape and clip it to a plates end. Slide the square along the board to align the tapes "On-Center" markings with the square's edge B (ref. fig. 1). You may accurately mark two plates (for both sides of a stud) by marking at edges A & D (or up to three studs by using edges A, D, E, & F). The ULTRA SQUARE automatically deducts 3/4" to center your studs.

DOORS/WINDOWS - TWO (AND THREE) STUDS: When you come to a door or window subtract 3" from the actual measurement of where the door's/window's inside edge is to be located. Align this measurement at edge A and mark edges A, D, & E (and F to include a cripple stud). At the other inside edge of the door/window align the actual measurement at edge D and mark edges D, E, & F (and A for the cripple stud).

NOTE: Edge C to edge F is the width of a 2X4, used to mark channel during plate layout.
Edge A to D, D to E, and E to F are each 1½" apart, used to mark studs during plate layout.

2X4 AND 2X6 CHANNEL: For intersecting 2X4 walls align the tape at edge C and mark edges C and F for the channel width. For 2X6 channel, align and mark edge A add 1” then mark edge F.

PLATES ON EDGES: Use an extra board as a spacer to mark plates without tape measure interference.
